About Mitsubishi Lancer

The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact passenger car first introduced in 1973. It became one of Mitsubishi’s longest-running nameplates, positioned in the brand’s mainstream car range below the larger Galant. Although best known as a four-door sedan, the family also included hatchback, wagon and Sportback body styles in selected markets.

Across several generations, specifications, styling and model names varied by region. Some versions shared engineering with the Mitsubishi Mirage, while later variations included the Lancer Cedia, Lancer EX, Galant Fortis and Grand Lancer. Most models used front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive available on certain versions.

The Lancer’s strongest identity comes from rallying and the Lancer Evolution. Developed through ten numbered versions, the Evolution combined turbocharged engines, four-wheel drive and specialised chassis technology. Its competition record gave the Lancer name a performance reputation extending well beyond the standard road cars.

Regular Lancer models were positioned as practical and accessible compact cars, known for straightforward packaging, useful passenger space and wide international availability. Production ended in most markets in 2017, while the Taiwan-market Grand Lancer remained in production until 2024.
