About Mitsubishi Jeep
The Mitsubishi Jeep was a compact, rugged four-wheel-drive utility vehicle built in Japan under licence from Willys-Overland. Mitsubishi completed its first J1 in 1953, initially assembling CJ-3A-based vehicles from imported parts before beginning domestic production. Later models were largely derived from the high-bonnet CJ-3B design. Production continued until 1998, with more than 200,000 vehicles built.
Rather than passing through clearly separated generations, the Jeep evolved gradually through numerous J-series families. Early J3 versions retained a short, open body, while the J20, J30 and J40 ranges added longer wheelbases, metal roofs, four-door wagon configurations and greater passenger or load capacity. The J50 series became the main short-wheelbase model and remained in production through the final J55. Both petrol and diesel engines were offered over the years, with later vehicles increasingly focused on diesel power.
The model occupied a work-oriented position in Mitsubishi’s range, serving civilian, commercial and public-sector users. It is best known for its simple construction, durable mechanical layout, compact dimensions and strong off-road capability. As Mitsubishi introduced the more comfortable Pajero in 1982, the Jeep became a specialised, traditional alternative. Its long production run made it an important foundation of Mitsubishi’s four-wheel-drive vehicle heritage.
