About Mitsubishi i
The Mitsubishi i is a compact five-door city car introduced in Japan in 2006. Developed primarily for the Japanese kei-car class, it used a tall, rounded body and a long wheelbase to provide four-seat accommodation within a very small footprint. Its unusual rear-mid-engine layout placed the engine ahead of the rear axle, helping free cabin space and giving the model a distinctive technical identity within Mitsubishi’s small-car range.
Gasoline versions were offered with naturally aspirated or turbocharged 659 cc three-cylinder engines, depending on specification and market. The battery-electric i-MiEV followed in 2009, replacing the engine and fuel system with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. In North America, the electric version was sold simply as the Mitsubishi i, with a wider body, revised bumpers and additional safety equipment. Specifications and trim structures varied internationally.
The i remained a single-generation design rather than developing into a long-running model family. Gasoline production ended in 2013, while the i-MiEV continued with updates until 2021. Positioned as an urban runabout rather than a conventional family hatchback, it is known for easy manoeuvrability, efficient use of space, rear-wheel drive and distinctive styling. The electric version also became an important early production EV and helped establish technology later used in Mitsubishi’s broader electrified-vehicle lineup.
