About Mitsubishi FTO
The Mitsubishi FTO is a compact two-door, four-seat sport coupe produced in Japan from 1994 to 2000. Its name revived that of the Galant Coupé FTO introduced in 1971, but the 1990s model was a distinct, front-wheel-drive car. It occupied a more accessible position below the larger Mitsubishi GTO, combining everyday usability with a stronger focus on agile handling and high-revving performance.
The modern FTO covered one generation, with a facelift introduced in 1997. Its low body, wide stance, short overhangs and rounded styling distinguished it from Mitsubishi’s contemporary saloons and hatchbacks. The range offered a 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and 2.0-litre V6 units, paired with a five-speed manual or an INVECS-II automatic transmission with a driver-selectable shift mode.
Major versions included the entry-level GS, V6-powered GR and later GX, and the higher-performance GPX with a MIVEC V6. The GP Version R provided a more focused variation with distinctive aerodynamic and chassis-related equipment. Specifications and special editions varied during production.
Developed mainly for the Japanese market, the FTO also became well known in several export regions through imported examples. It is particularly associated with responsive road manners, compact proportions, unusual V6 availability for its class and its 1994–95 Japan Car of the Year award.
