About Mitsubishi Eclipse
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact developed mainly for North America and sold for the 1990–2012 model years. It was built in Normal, Illinois, initially under the Diamond-Star Motors partnership between Mitsubishi and Chrysler. The Eclipse occupied the sporty, accessible end of Mitsubishi’s passenger-car range.
Across four generations, the Eclipse was primarily a three-door liftback coupe. The Eclipse Spyder convertible joined the range during the second generation and returned in later generations. Early cars are the best-known enthusiast versions, particularly the turbocharged GS-T and all-wheel-drive GSX. Their compact proportions and 4G63 turbo engine helped establish the Eclipse in the 1990s sport-compact and tuning scenes.
The third and fourth generations changed direction, becoming larger and more comfort-oriented. They used front-wheel drive and offered four-cylinder or V6 power, depending on the version. Common later grades included GS and GT, while Special Edition models added distinctive trim and equipment.
The Eclipse is known for bold coupe styling, a practical hatchback layout and a broad range spanning affordable everyday models, turbocharged performance variants and open-top Spyders. It served as Mitsubishi’s main North American sport coupe until production ended in 2011 after the 2012 model year.
