About Mitsubishi Diamante
The Mitsubishi Diamante is a mid-size executive car introduced in Japan in 1990. Positioned above the Galant in Mitsubishi’s passenger-car range, it offered a more spacious cabin, stronger V6 engines and higher equipment levels. The original wide-body four-door hardtop was named Japan Car of the Year for 1990–1991.
Two principal generations were produced. Depending on the market and period, the Diamante appeared as a hardtop-style saloon, a conventional saloon or an estate. Most versions used front-wheel drive, although early Japanese models included all-wheel drive and four-wheel-steering options. Engine choices were centred on Mitsubishi’s 2.0-, 2.5-, 3.0- and 3.5-litre V6 families, with specifications varying by country and model year.
The model’s international identity was complex. Some Japanese-built versions were marketed as the Mitsubishi Sigma outside Japan, while later export models—particularly those sold in North America—were manufactured in Australia and closely related to the Magna and luxury-oriented Verada. Australian-built Diamante exports began in 1996, and production of the related Magna and Verada range continued through 2005.
The Diamante is mainly known for comfortable long-distance travel, a roomy interior, smooth V6 performance and understated styling. It represented Mitsubishi’s effort to compete in the near-luxury and executive-car segments without moving beyond the brand’s mainstream positioning.
