About Mitsubishi Debonair

The Mitsubishi Debonair was a large four-door executive sedan produced from 1964 to 1999, primarily for Japan. It occupied the upper end of Mitsubishi’s passenger-car range and competed with established domestic luxury sedans. The model became closely associated with corporate, official and chauffeur-driven use, including service within Mitsubishi-affiliated organisations, rather than high-volume private sales.

The first generation remained in production for 22 years without a complete redesign. Its formal, American-influenced styling, rear-wheel-drive layout and conservative character gave it a distinctive market position. Detail revisions and engine updates kept the car current, but its basic shape changed little.

A full model change arrived in 1986 with the second-generation Debonair V. It adopted front-wheel drive, V6 engines and more modern luxury equipment while retaining a restrained appearance. Variations included 2.0- and 3.0-litre models, plus the rare 3000 Royal AMG, developed with input from AMG. The third generation followed in 1992 with a larger body, a roomier cabin, 3.0- and 3.5-litre V6 engines and Mitsubishi’s INVECS automatic transmission.

Across three generations, the Debonair was known for space, quiet cruising, comfort and discreet status rather than sporting character.
