About Mitsubishi Carisma
The Mitsubishi Carisma is a European-focused family car produced from 1995 to 2004. Developed specifically for Europe, it was built at the NedCar plant in Born, Netherlands, as part of Mitsubishi’s expansion into local European manufacturing. The five-door liftback entered production in 1995, followed by a four-door saloon, including a right-hand-drive version exported to Japan.
The Carisma remained one model generation rather than progressing through several distinct generations. It received a major facelift in 1999. Depending on year and market, buyers could choose petrol or diesel engines, manual or automatic transmission, and several equipment levels. The 1.8-litre GDI direct-injection petrol model was among the most technically notable versions.
Within Mitsubishi’s European passenger-car range, the Carisma sat between the smaller Lancer and the larger Galant. Its design prioritised cabin space, comfort and everyday usability rather than a strongly sporting character. Saloon and liftback bodies broadened its practicality, while balanced suspension and efficient interior packaging reflected its European development brief. Production ended in 2004, after which the Lancer covered much of the same market position.
