About Mitsubishi 3000GT
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a 2+2 grand touring sports car developed as one of the brand’s flagship performance models of the 1990s. Introduced in Japan in 1990 as the GTO, it was sold as the 3000GT in export markets, including North America for the 1991–1999 model years. Japanese production continued into 2000.
Built mainly as a two-door liftback coupe, it used a front-mounted 3.0-litre V6 with front- or all-wheel drive, depending on the version. Naturally aspirated models formed the accessible end of the range, while the VR-4 added twin turbochargers, full-time all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Equipment on some versions included electronically controlled suspension and active aerodynamics.
The 3000GT remained within one core generation but underwent major styling and equipment revisions, often divided into three series. Early cars featured pop-up headlamps, while later models adopted fixed projector-style lights and updated bodywork. Limited-production Spyder SL and VR-4 models with power-retractable hardtops were offered in North America for 1995 and 1996.
Known for its technology-rich design, high-speed touring character and wide, distinctive styling, the 3000GT occupied a sophisticated grand-tourer position above Mitsubishi’s smaller sports coupes. Specifications vary significantly by year and market.
