About MINI Roadster

The MINI Roadster is a compact two-seat sports car introduced in 2012. Known internally as the R59, it was MINI’s first open-top two-seater and served as the soft-top companion to the fixed-roof MINI Coupé. Production took place at Plant Oxford in England and ended in 2015.

Unlike the four-seat MINI Convertible, the Roadster was designed specifically around two occupants. Its low roofline, steeply angled windscreen, short overhangs and separate luggage compartment gave it more traditional roadster proportions. A manually operated fabric roof was fitted, while an active rear spoiler deployed automatically at speed. The boot offered 240 litres of luggage capacity, making the car reasonably practical for its class.

The range varied by market. Petrol versions included the Cooper, turbocharged Cooper S and performance-focused John Cooper Works. Some regions also received the Cooper SD turbodiesel. Six-speed manual transmissions were widely available, with automatic gearboxes offered on selected versions.

Positioned as a niche premium small sports car, the Roadster emphasised open-air driving and agility rather than passenger space. It retained MINI’s front-wheel-drive layout, distinctive cabin design and extensive personalisation options, but combined them with a lower centre of gravity and a more focused two-seat configuration.
