About Mercury Zephyr
The Mercury Zephyr was a compact family car sold in North America for the 1978–1983 model years. It replaced the Mercury Comet and was positioned as a slightly more upmarket counterpart to the Ford Fairmont. Within Mercury’s range, it initially sat above the smaller Bobcat and below the Monarch, offering practical transport with more distinctive trim than its Ford relative.
Produced in a single generation, the Zephyr used Ford’s rear-wheel-drive Fox platform, which later underpinned several Ford, Mercury and Lincoln models. Its conventional layout, relatively low weight and straightforward engineering reflected the industry’s shift towards more space-efficient and economical cars in the late 1970s.
The range included two-door and four-door sedans, a station wagon and the Zephyr Z-7 coupe. The Z-7 featured a more formal roof design and served as the sportier, personal-luxury variation. Other versions included ES, Ghia and later GS trims, while the Villager wagon package added simulated woodgrain exterior treatment.
Four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines were offered at different points in the production run. The Zephyr is chiefly known for its boxy Mercury styling, useful passenger space, broad body-style selection and shared Fox-platform mechanical basis. It was replaced by the front-wheel-drive Mercury Topaz for 1984.
