About Mercury Tracer
Mercury Tracer was Mercury’s entry-level small car, replacing the Lynx and serving the 1987–1989 and 1991–1999 model years. Initially classed as a subcompact and later as a compact, it gave the brand a practical model below its larger cars. The Tracer also reflected Ford’s expanding product-development relationship with Mazda.
Three generations were produced. The first was developed from the Mazda 323-related Ford Laser and came as three- and five-door hatchbacks and a five-door station wagon. Following a one-model-year gap, the redesigned 1991 Tracer moved into closer alignment with the North American Ford Escort and Mazda Protegé. The second and third generations focused on four-door sedan and five-door wagon bodies, with front-wheel drive throughout.
Most Tracers were straightforward economy cars designed around useful interior space and everyday practicality. The second-generation LTS was the notable sportier version, combining the sedan body with a more powerful Mazda-sourced engine and additional equipment. Later models used GS and LS trim designations, with a Trio appearance package offered on some GS cars. Within Mercury’s range, the Tracer was a lightly differentiated compact alternative to the Escort rather than a distinct premium model.
