About Mercury Topaz
The Mercury Topaz was a compact car sold for the 1984–1994 model years. Developed for the North American market, it replaced the Mercury Zephyr and served as the brand’s counterpart to the Ford Tempo. It occupied Mercury’s entry-level passenger-car position below the larger Sable, offering slightly different styling and trim from its Ford relative.
Available as a two-door coupe and four-door sedan, the Topaz used a front-wheel-drive layout and was produced in two generations. The first covered 1984–1987, while a redesigned version arrived for 1988 and continued through 1994. Its rounded, aerodynamic shape reflected Ford’s move towards more efficient, modern-looking family cars during the 1980s.
GS and LS were the main versions, with equipment levels varying by year. Sportier XR5 coupe and LTS sedan variants were also offered. Most Topaz models used a 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, while later performance-oriented versions gained a 3.0-litre V6. Selected model years could be equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system intended to improve traction on slippery roads.
The Topaz is mainly known as a practical, conservatively priced commuter and small family car. After 1994, its place in Mercury’s range was taken by the Mystique.
