About Mercury Sable
The Mercury Sable was introduced for the 1986 model year as Mercury’s counterpart to the Ford Taurus. It replaced the Marquis in the brand’s mainstream family-car range and offered more distinctive styling and equipment than its Ford relative. Early models were particularly recognizable for their aerodynamic shape and full-width front lighting treatment. The Sable generally prioritised ride comfort, cabin space and everyday practicality.
Four generations were produced from 1986 to 2005, with both four-door sedan and station wagon body styles available. Most versions combined V6 power with front-wheel drive, while trim levels such as GS and LS covered basic and better-equipped specifications. The wagon added useful cargo capacity, and successive redesigns maintained the Sable’s place as a slightly more upscale alternative to the Taurus.
After a two-model-year absence, the name returned for 2008 and 2009 on a revised Mercury Montego. This final-generation Sable was a larger, sedan-only model with a 3.5-litre V6, six-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive. Offered in base and Premier forms, it was known for its spacious rear seating, large luggage compartment and relaxed road manners. Production ended in 2009.
