About Mercury Mystique
The Mercury Mystique was a front-wheel-drive four-door sedan sold for the 1995 through 2000 model years. It replaced the Mercury Topaz and occupied the lower-middle part of Mercury’s passenger-car range, below the larger Sable. Although classified as a midsize car in the United States, it was relatively compact by North American standards.
Developed alongside the Ford Contour, the Mystique was based on Ford’s global Mondeo programme. It brought European-influenced chassis design and road manners to Mercury’s lineup, while featuring distinct exterior details and a more upscale presentation than its Ford counterpart. The model had one generation, with a substantial styling and equipment update for 1998 rather than a complete redesign.
Most versions were offered in GS and better-equipped LS trims, while Sport packages were available in some years. Engines included a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5-litre V6, depending on model year and trim. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered. Unlike the Mondeo available in other markets, the Mystique was limited to sedan bodywork.
The Mystique is mainly known as Mercury’s compact, globally engineered alternative to conventional American family sedans of the 1990s. Tidy handling and the available V6 were notable qualities, although rear-seat space was modest for its market class. Production ended after the 2000 model year without a direct Mercury successor.
