About Mercury Mountaineer
The Mercury Mountaineer was a mid-size, five-door SUV offered for the 1997–2010 model years. Mercury’s first SUV, it shared its main engineering with the Ford Explorer but was positioned as a more upmarket alternative, with distinct exterior styling, richer interior trim and additional comfort features. It later served as Mercury’s larger SUV above the compact Mariner.
Three generations were produced: 1997–2001, 2002–2005 and 2006–2010. All used truck-based, body-on-frame construction. Depending on the year and specification, versions were available with rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The engine range included V6 and V8 petrol units, all paired with automatic transmissions. Later models offered seating for five, six or seven occupants, including an available third row. Premier versions added higher-grade equipment and trim.
The Mountaineer is known for combining traditional SUV attributes, including useful towing capacity and available V8 power, with Mercury’s comfort-focused character. Its unique grille, lighting and trim helped distinguish it from related models. Production ended after the 2010 model year as Ford discontinued the Mercury brand.
