About Mercury Montego
The Mercury Montego is a nameplate used for three generations of North American cars. It first appeared across the United States and Canada for 1968 and remained in production through 1976. During this period, the Montego was Mercury’s intermediate model and a more upscale counterpart to the Ford Torino.
Early Montegos were offered in several body styles, including two- and four-door models, a convertible and station wagons. The range included standard, MX and luxury-oriented MX Brougham versions. The second generation arrived for 1972 with larger proportions and body-on-frame construction. Sportier variations included the short-lived Montego GT, while some cars were available with a Cyclone package. These models are known for their distinctive period styling, broad engine selection and balance of family-car practicality and traditional Mercury comfort.
Mercury revived the name for the 2005 model year after a long absence. This third-generation Montego was a full-size four-door sedan related to the Ford Five Hundred. Positioned between the smaller Milan and the rear-wheel-drive Grand Marquis, it offered front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive, with a 3.0-litre V6 engine. Its notable qualities included a spacious cabin, high seating position, large boot and restrained design. After the 2007 model year, the Montego was renamed the Mercury Sable.
