About Mercury Marquis
The Mercury Marquis was produced from 1967 to 1986 across four generations. Introduced as an upscale counterpart to the Ford LTD, it initially served as Mercury’s flagship full-size car above the Monterey. The first model was a two-door hardtop, but the range soon expanded to include two- and four-door models, sedans, hardtops, a convertible and station wagons.
For most of its life, the Marquis was a traditional American full-size, rear-wheel-drive car. It was positioned between mainstream Ford models and more expensive Lincoln vehicles, combining shared Ford engineering with distinctive Mercury styling and higher-grade trim. The Marquis became known for its spacious cabin, comfort-focused ride, formal exterior design and broad selection of body styles.
Major versions included the more richly equipped Marquis Brougham. The Grand Marquis appeared as the top trim level in 1975 before becoming a separate full-size Mercury model for 1983. The Colony Park, Mercury’s woodgrain-trimmed station wagon, was also associated with the Marquis range during its full-size years.
The third generation arrived for 1979 with substantially reduced exterior dimensions and weight. In 1983, the Marquis name moved to a smaller mid-size platform and was offered as a sedan or wagon. This final generation remained a conventional rear-wheel-drive alternative in Mercury’s line until the front-wheel-drive Sable replaced it after 1986.
