About Mercury Lynx

The Mercury Lynx was a front-wheel-drive small car sold in North America for the 1981–1987 model years. Introduced as the successor to the rear-wheel-drive Mercury Bobcat, it was Mercury’s version of the North American Ford Escort and the brand’s first front-wheel-drive model. Distinctive grille details, trim and equipment gave it a Mercury identity, although its engineering and basic body design were shared with the Escort.

The Lynx occupied the entry-level position in Mercury’s range, below larger models such as the Topaz. It was offered as a three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback and five-door station wagon, providing economical transport with useful passenger and cargo space. Four-cylinder petrol engines were standard, while a diesel engine was available in selected years. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered.

The model had one basic generation, with a substantial update during the 1985 model year that brought smoother front-end styling, revised interiors and updated petrol engines. Trim levels varied over time and included base, L, GL, GS, LS and RS versions. Sport-oriented variations included the turbocharged RS, five-door LTS and later XR3 hatchback, while some wagons were available with Villager-style wood-effect exterior trim.

Known mainly for practical packaging, low running costs and compact dimensions, the Lynx reflected Ford’s early-1980s move towards efficient front-wheel-drive cars. It was replaced in Mercury’s lineup by the Tracer during 1987.
