About Mercury LN7

The Mercury LN7 was a compact, two-seat hatchback coupe sold in North America for the 1982 and 1983 model years. Developed as Mercury’s counterpart to the Ford EXP, it used the front-wheel-drive platform and much of the running gear of the contemporary Mercury Lynx and Ford Escort. It arrived as US manufacturers were introducing smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, but gave that economy-car foundation a lower, sportier body.

The LN7 formed a single, short-lived generation. Power came from versions of Ford’s 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, paired with manual or automatic transmissions. Engine output and fuel-delivery choices evolved during its brief production run. An optional TR performance package added suspension and wheel-and-tyre upgrades, while the 1983 model received minor interior and mechanical revisions rather than a major redesign.

Within Mercury’s range, the LN7 occupied an unusual niche alongside established coupes such as the Capri and Cougar. It was positioned as an economical personal sporting car rather than a high-performance model. Its most recognisable feature is the curved “bubbleback” rear hatch glass, which distinguished it from the Ford EXP, along with Mercury-specific grille, lamp and trim details. Modest sales ended the LN7 after 1983, making it a comparatively uncommon example of early-1980s compact, aerodynamic design.
