About Mercury Capri
The Mercury Capri nameplate covered three distinctly different sporty cars sold in North America from the early 1970s through 1994. Rather than one continuous design, it was a recurring name for compact, style-focused vehicles positioned below Mercury’s larger or more expensive performance models.
The first version was a rear-wheel-drive European Ford Capri imported from Germany and sold through Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Initially marketed simply as Capri, without Ford or Mercury badging, it was a compact 2+2 coupe and later a hatchback. Four-cylinder and V6 engines were offered, combining long-hood styling with practical dimensions and relatively economical operation.
For 1979, Capri became a formal Mercury model and a close relative of the Ford Mustang. Built in the United States on Ford’s Fox platform, it came only as a three-door hatchback and featured distinct Mercury exterior styling. Versions ranged from regular four- and six-cylinder cars to turbocharged and V8 performance derivatives, including the RS and later 5.0L models.
The final Capri, sold from 1991 to 1994, changed direction again. Built by Ford Australia, it was a front-wheel-drive 2+2 convertible using Mazda 323 and Ford Laser mechanicals. Base and turbocharged XR2 versions were available, with an optional removable hardtop. The Capri is known for its varied global origins and its changing role as a European coupe, American pony car and Australian-built roadster.
