About Mercedes-Benz Viano
The Mercedes-Benz Viano is a large passenger van and people carrier produced from 2003 to 2014. Built on the W639 architecture and closely related to the Vito, it succeeded the first-generation V-Class in many markets. Production was centred at Mercedes-Benz’s Vitoria plant in Spain.
Mercedes positioned the Viano above the more work-focused Vito, adding improved sound insulation, higher-grade cabin materials and passenger-oriented equipment. It was intended for families, business users, executive transport and shuttle services, combining substantial carrying capacity with greater comfort than a conventional commercial van.
The model was sold as one main W639 generation, with a significant update in 2010. Three body lengths—compact, long and extra-long—were offered alongside flexible seating configurations and market-dependent trim levels such as Trend, Ambiente, Fun and Avantgarde. The range included petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, rear-wheel drive and selected 4MATIC all-wheel-drive variants.
Leisure versions were an important part of the line-up. The adaptable Viano Fun supported occasional sleeping use, while the Marco Polo was equipped as a compact camper. The Viano became known for its spacious, configurable interior, sliding-door access and long-distance practicality. In 2014, it was replaced by the W447 generation, which revived the V-Class name.
