About Mercedes-Benz V-Class
The Mercedes-Benz V-Class is a large premium MPV designed for family travel, executive transport and leisure use. Introduced in 1996, it shares its basic vehicle architecture with the Mercedes-Benz Vito commercial van but adds a more passenger-focused interior, higher equipment levels and greater emphasis on comfort. Production is centred at the Mercedes-Benz Vans plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
Its lineage covers three principal model series. The original W638 was produced from 1996 to 2003. The W639 generation followed, with passenger versions generally sold as the Viano. Mercedes-Benz restored the V-Class name for the W447 generation introduced in 2014, which has since received substantial updates to its design, technology and equipment.
Depending on the year and market, the V-Class has been offered in several body lengths, seating layouts and trim levels, including more distinctive AMG Line versions. Powertrain choices have mainly centred on diesel engines, with rear-wheel drive standard on many models and 4MATIC all-wheel drive available on selected variants. The Marco Polo derivative adapts the platform for camping and recreational travel.
Within the Mercedes-Benz range, the V-Class occupies the role of a spacious luxury people carrier. It is known for flexible seating, sliding side doors, substantial luggage capacity and the ability to combine van-based practicality with passenger-car comfort and safety technology.
