About Mercedes-Benz T1

The Mercedes-Benz T1 was a light commercial vehicle introduced in 1977 and produced until 1995. Also known as the TN and widely called the “Bremer Transporter”, it was initially built in Bremen before production was consolidated in Düsseldorf. Positioned between smaller vans and heavier commercial vehicles, it became the direct predecessor of the Sprinter.

The T1 was available as a panel van, passenger bus or minibus, pickup, crew-cab model and chassis cab for specialist bodywork. Several wheelbases, roof heights and weight classes supported uses ranging from delivery and passenger transport to emergency vehicles, motorhomes and municipal conversions. The range included petrol and diesel engines, with diesel versions becoming especially prominent.

Initial variants included the 207 D, 208, 307 D and 308. The line later expanded with models such as the 209 D, 210 D, 309 D and 310 D, alongside heavier 4-series versions. It remained one long-running generation, receiving detail changes and a substantial technical revision in 1989 rather than a complete redesign.

The T1 is known for its angular, functional design, broad configuration choice, robust construction and suitability for demanding commercial use. Its adaptable format and extensive model range established key qualities later continued by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
