About Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a two-seat, front-mid-engined super sports car developed by Mercedes-AMG. Unveiled in 2009 and produced from 2010 to 2014, it served as a halo performance model and was the first complete road car developed independently by AMG. Its long bonnet, rear-set cabin and gullwing doors recalled the 1950s Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, while its aluminium structure placed it firmly in the modern supercar class.
Only one generation was produced, with the C197 coupé joined by the R197 roadster. Most versions used a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre AMG V8, a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle and rear-wheel drive. The Roadster combined conventional doors with a fabric roof. Later variations included the more focused SLS AMG GT and the lighter, more powerful Black Series. The range also featured the battery-electric SLS AMG Electric Drive, while the SLS AMG GT3 was developed for customer racing.
The SLS AMG is known for dramatic proportions, its distinctive V8 character and a balanced front-mid-engine layout. It combined high performance with more touring ability than many dedicated supercars. Positioned above regular AMG versions as a stand-alone flagship, it established a template for later AMG-developed sports cars. Its role was subsequently taken over by the smaller Mercedes-AMG GT.
