About Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a limited-production high-performance grand tourer developed jointly by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Built in Woking, England, from 2004 to 2009, it served as a flagship above the regular Mercedes-Benz sports-car range and reflected the companies’ Formula One partnership. Just over 2,000 examples were produced.
The SLR belongs to the 199 model series and had one generation. Its front-mid-engine layout combines a hand-built 5.4-litre supercharged V8 with an automatic transmission. Carbon-fibre construction, powerful carbon-ceramic brakes and active aerodynamics supported its blend of supercar performance and long-distance touring ability. Distinctive features include a long bonnet, side exhaust outlets and upward-opening doors.
The range began with the coupé and expanded to the Roadster. More focused versions included the 722 Edition coupé and 722 S Roadster, named in reference to Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson’s 1955 Mille Miglia victory. The 722 GT was a track-only racing derivative, while the roofless, windscreen-free Stirling Moss speedster concluded production in 2009 with a limited run of 75 cars.
Known for its unusual combination of luxury, dramatic styling and extreme performance, the SLR occupies a distinct place between a traditional grand tourer and a contemporary supercar.
