About Mercedes-Benz SLK

The Mercedes-Benz SLK is a compact two-seat roadster introduced in 1996. Its name comes from the German words for sporty, light and short. Positioned below the larger SL, it extended the Mercedes-Benz sports car range with a smaller, more accessible model. Its defining feature was the powered folding steel Vario-roof, which provided coupé-like weather protection when closed and open-air driving when lowered.

Three generations were produced: the R170 from 1996, R171 from 2004 and R172 from 2011. The third generation was revised and renamed SLC in 2016, ending use of the SLK badge; SLC production continued until 2020. The range included four- and six-cylinder engines, supercharged Kompressor versions and higher-performance AMG models. Notable variants included the SLK 32 AMG and the V8-powered SLK 55 AMG, with specifications varying by market and model year.

The SLK is known for combining compact dimensions, rear-wheel drive and classic two-seat roadster proportions with greater everyday usability than many traditional convertibles. Its retractable hardtop, varied engine range and balance of comfort and sporting character gave it a distinct position as the compact counterpart to the SL.
