About Mercedes-Benz SL
The Mercedes-Benz SL is a premium open-top sports car and grand tourer. Its roots reach back to the competition-derived 300 SL, introduced as a production coupé in 1954 and followed by a roadster in 1957. The model became known for combining strong performance with comfort, advanced engineering and distinctive styling rather than focusing solely on track-oriented driving.
The SL family has evolved through several notable series. These include the early 300 SL and 190 SL, the W113 “Pagoda”, the long-running R107, the technically advanced R129, and the R230 and R231 generations with folding metal roofs. Engines and specifications have varied widely by period and market, from six-cylinder models to V8, V12 and high-performance AMG versions.
The current R232 generation returned to a fabric soft top and introduced a 2+2 cabin. Developed by Mercedes-AMG, it is offered in selected markets with four-cylinder, V8 and plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the Mercedes-Maybach SL provides a more comfort-focused two-seat variation. Positioned above the brand’s mainstream convertibles, the SL remains a flagship roadster valued for its blend of performance, long-distance usability, luxury and open-air character.
