About Mercedes-Benz SK
The Mercedes-Benz SK, short for Schwere Klasse or “Heavy Class”, was the brand’s principal heavy-duty truck range from its introduction in 1988 until production ended in 1998. It developed the long-running NG platform with revised cab styling, updated diesel engines, new transmissions and improved chassis technology. The Actros began replacing it in 1996, with both ranges produced in parallel for a period.
Designed for high gross weights, the cab-over SK was offered as a tractor unit and rigid chassis. Its many configurations supported long-distance haulage, regional freight, construction, tipping, heavy transport and specialist bodywork. Buyers could choose different wheelbases, axle layouts and cab sizes, including sleeper and high-roof versions. Engine choices varied by model and market, with six-, eight- and, in specialised applications, larger V-configuration diesels.
The range evolved through several updates rather than completely separate generations. Early trucks had a wide black grille, while later versions received mechanical, equipment and exterior revisions. Available features included ABS, traction control and the EPS electropneumatic gear-selection system on certain models.
Positioned above Mercedes-Benz’s lighter commercial trucks, the SK became known for its robust construction, broad model range and suitability for demanding work. Its conventional engineering and durable driveline also helped it remain in service long after production ended.
