About Mercedes-Benz S-Class
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the brand’s flagship luxury saloon and sits above the C-Class and E-Class in its passenger-car range. The S-Class name was introduced with the W116 series in 1972, although its lineage extends to earlier Mercedes-Benz luxury models. Seven principal generations have followed: W116, W126, W140, W220, W221, W222 and W223. The W223 arrived in 2020 and received an extensive update in 2026.
Primarily a four-door saloon, the S-Class has been offered with standard and long wheelbases to suit owner-drivers and chauffeur use. Major variations include the more luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, high-security Guard models and, in several generations, Mercedes-AMG performance versions. Depending on the period and market, engine choices have included petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with rear- or all-wheel drive. Some generations also supported related coupé and cabriolet models.
Production is centred in Sindelfingen, Germany, where the current S-Class is assembled at Factory 56. Within the Mercedes-Benz lineup, it serves as a technology flagship, often introducing advanced safety, driver-assistance, suspension and cabin systems before they reach smaller models. It is particularly known for ride comfort, quietness, spacious rear seating, high-quality interiors and long-distance refinement.
