About Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a luxury off-road vehicle that combines traditional 4x4 engineering with the comfort, technology and performance expected from the brand’s upper model range. Introduced in 1979 as the G-Model, it was developed for demanding civilian, commercial and government use. Production has remained in Graz, Austria.
Early 460-series vehicles were offered in several body styles, wheelbases and petrol or diesel versions. The 463 series, introduced in 1990, shifted the model towards the premium market while retaining its separate ladder frame, four-wheel drive and differential locks. A substantially redesigned generation arrived in 2018, followed by further updates that preserved the familiar upright shape and rear-mounted spare wheel.
The range has included practical utility models, standard luxury versions and high-performance Mercedes-AMG variants. Unusual limited-production derivatives have included cabriolet, 4x4², six-wheel and Mercedes-Maybach models. The battery-electric G 580 with EQ Technology extended the line beyond conventional petrol and diesel power.
Within the Mercedes-Benz SUV range, the G-Class is positioned as a distinctive, high-end model rather than a conventional family crossover. It is best known for strong off-road ability, robust construction, a commanding driving position and a design that has changed gradually while remaining immediately recognisable.
