About Mercedes-Benz Econic
Mercedes-Benz introduced the Econic in 1998 as a low-entry heavy commercial vehicle developed mainly for urban and municipal work. Initial production took place in Arbon, Switzerland, before assembly moved to the Mercedes-Benz truck plant in Wörth, Germany, in 2003. A new generation entered series production in 2013 and forms the basis of the current model.
The Econic is best known as a refuse collection truck, but its chassis also supports fire and emergency vehicles, urban distribution trucks, road-maintenance equipment and airport service vehicles. It occupies a specialist position in the Mercedes-Benz Trucks range, with a design tailored to frequent stops, dense traffic and customised body installations.
Its defining feature is the low-floor cab, which provides easy entry, ample crew space and a low seating position. Large glazed areas and the DirectVision cab concept improve the driver’s view of pedestrians, cyclists and nearby traffic. Low- and high-cab layouts, several wheelbases, and two-, three- and four-axle configurations suit different duties and weight classes.
Diesel versions have formed the core of the range. Natural-gas models were offered from 2002 until production gave way to the battery-electric eEconic in 2022. The Econic is particularly associated with crew ergonomics, manoeuvrability, urban visibility and adaptability to specialised bodies.
