About Mercedes-Benz A-Class
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is a compact passenger car introduced in 1997 as a more accessible entry point to the brand’s range. Initially shaped as a tall, space-efficient hatchback, it brought Mercedes-Benz engineering, comfort and safety features into a smaller format suited to urban and family use.
Four generations have been produced. The first W168 and second W169 generations used an unusually high-roofed layout that prioritised cabin space and flexible packaging. The third-generation W176, launched in 2012, changed direction with a lower, sportier five-door hatchback body. The fourth-generation W177 arrived in 2018 with more refined styling, increased digital technology and a wider choice of equipment. A four-door saloon version was also introduced in selected markets.
Versions have varied by country and model year, with petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, front-wheel drive and optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Some later models added mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid technology. Performance-focused Mercedes-AMG variants include the A 35 and A 45, while regular models range from efficiency-oriented editions to higher-specification luxury and sport trims.
The A-Class is known for combining compact dimensions with a premium cabin, modern infotainment and everyday practicality. It occupies the entry-level end of the Mercedes-Benz passenger-car line-up while offering many design and technology features associated with the brand’s larger vehicles.
