About Mercedes-Benz 600
The Mercedes-Benz 600 was a large ultra-luxury saloon developed as the brand’s flagship and a vehicle for official, diplomatic and private use. Introduced in 1963 and produced from 1964 to 1981, it carried the internal series designation W 100 and was widely known as the “Grand Mercedes”. Only 2,677 examples were built, reflecting its specialised market position and labour-intensive construction.
The range consisted of a standard-wheelbase four-door saloon and the longer 600 Pullman. Pullman models were offered with four or six doors, while highly exclusive landaulet versions combined an enclosed front compartment with a folding roof over the rear passenger area. Mercedes-Benz also produced armoured vehicles and numerous individually specified examples. The 600 remained a single model generation throughout its long production run rather than developing through several redesigns.
All versions used a fuel-injected 6.3-litre V8 with an automatic transmission. Notable engineering included air suspension and an extensive hydraulic system that operated functions such as the windows, seats, doors and boot lid. Its spacious rear accommodation, formal styling, strong performance and scope for customisation placed it above the company’s regular luxury saloons. The model became especially associated with heads of state, royalty, business leaders and prominent entertainers, and remains one of Mercedes-Benz’s best-known prestige vehicles.
