About Mercedes-Benz 190
The Mercedes-Benz 190 is a compact four-door saloon produced from 1982 to 1993 under the W201 series designation. Often nicknamed the “Baby-Benz”, it introduced the brand to a smaller vehicle class below its established executive and luxury models. The 190 was offered in a single generation and became the direct predecessor of the C-Class, which replaced it in 1993.
The range began with the carburettor-equipped 190 and fuel-injected 190 E, followed by several petrol and diesel versions. Major variations included the economical 190 D, five-cylinder 190 D 2.5, turbocharged diesel models and the six-cylinder 190 E 2.6. Sportier 16-valve versions included the 190 E 2.3-16 and 2.5-16, with limited-production Evolution and Evolution II models developed for touring-car competition.
The 190 is known for combining compact dimensions with the solid construction, safety focus and long-distance comfort associated with larger Mercedes-Benz saloons of its era. Its five-link independent rear suspension was a notable technical feature, contributing to balanced handling and later influencing other Mercedes-Benz models. Nearly 1.88 million W201 vehicles were built, making the 190 an important model in the expansion of the brand’s passenger-car range.
