About Mazda RX-8
Mazda produced the RX-8 from 2003 until 2012. It followed the RX-7 in Mazda’s rotary-powered RX lineage but adopted a different formula: four seats, a compact body and four “freestyle” doors. The small rear doors open backwards, improving access to the rear seats while preserving a coupe-like profile.
Every RX-8 uses Mazda’s naturally aspirated twin-rotor RENESIS engine and rear-wheel drive. The compact engine sits low and behind the front axle, helping provide balanced weight distribution and responsive handling. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, with specifications and output varying by year and market.
The RX-8 remained a single generation throughout production. A substantial refresh arrived in 2008, sold as a 2009 model in some markets, with revised styling and chassis updates. Versions ranged from standard and luxury-oriented trims to performance-focused models such as the R3 and Japan-market Type RS. The Spirit R, introduced in Japan in 2011, was the final special edition.
Within Mazda’s range, the RX-8 served as a distinctive performance model and a more practical alternative to traditional sports coupes. It is best known for its smooth, high-revving rotary engine, unusual door layout, usable four-seat cabin and agile chassis. Its rotary design also gives it maintenance and operating requirements that differ from piston-engined cars.
