About Mazda RX-7

Mazda RX-7 is a rear-wheel-drive sports car built around Mazda’s compact rotary engine. Introduced in 1978 as the Savanna RX-7 in Japan, it became one of the brand’s defining performance models and a prominent production application of rotary power. Its front-mid-engine layout supported balanced handling, while its low profile, relatively light weight and high-revving character distinguished it from conventional piston-engined rivals.

The RX-7 was produced in three generations. The first-generation SA/FB established the formula as a two-door sports coupe. The second-generation FC, launched in 1985, adopted a more substantial grand-touring character and was also offered as a convertible in some markets. The third-generation FD arrived in 1991 with a lighter, more focused design, a twin-turbocharged 13B twin-rotor engine and near 50:50 weight distribution.

Specifications and trim names varied by market and year, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and two-seat or 2+2 layouts. Japan also received performance-oriented Type R variants and the final Spirit R editions. Production ended in 2002. Within Mazda’s range, the RX-7 served as a specialist sports car and rotary-engine flagship. It remains known for responsive handling, distinctive styling and its smooth, compact powertrain.
