About Mazda Porter

The Mazda Porter was a compact commercial vehicle line created for Japan’s kei class. Introduced in 1968 as the successor to the B360, it occupied the smallest end of Mazda’s utility-vehicle range. Its purpose was straightforward: practical transport for local deliveries, small businesses and other tasks where compact dimensions and manoeuvrability mattered.

The original Porter was available as a conventional-front pickup or light van. A related cab-over pickup, the Porter Cab, arrived in 1969 and became the longer-lived, better-known version. Early models used engines within the 360 cc kei limit, including four-stroke and later two-stroke units. Following changes to kei regulations, the second-generation Porter Cab appeared in 1977 with a 546 cc Mitsubishi-sourced two-cylinder engine. Later revisions mainly involved styling, equipment and mechanical updates rather than complete redesigns.

Production of the standard Porter truck and van ended in 1976, while the Porter Cab continued until 1989. The range was sold mainly in Japan, although export versions used the E360 name. Known for its tiny footprint, simple construction and distinctive cab-over styling, the Porter filled Mazda’s lightest commercial role before being succeeded by the Scrum.
