About Mazda Navajo
The Mazda Navajo was a two-door, truck-based SUV sold for the 1991–1994 model years. Developed for the North American market, it was Mazda’s first SUV and gave the brand an entry in the rapidly expanding sport utility segment. The Navajo was built by Ford in Louisville, Kentucky, and was closely related to the first-generation Ford Explorer, with Mazda-specific front-end styling, rear lights, wheels and trim.
Only one generation was produced. Every Navajo used a 4.0-litre V6 paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive was standard at launch, while a rear-wheel-drive version joined the range for 1992. The later line-up centred on the entry-level DX and better-equipped LX, both offered with two- or four-wheel drive by the final model year.
The Navajo occupied a sporty, compact position beside Mazda’s cars and pickup trucks. Its body-on-frame construction, available low-range four-wheel drive, folding rear seat and useful cargo area suited both everyday transport and recreational use. It was named MotorTrend’s 1991 Truck of the Year, but the lack of a four-door version limited its appeal as family buyers increasingly favoured larger, more practical SUVs. Its short production run and modest sales make it an uncommon model today.
