About Mazda MX-6

Mazda MX-6 was a two-door, front-wheel-drive coupé sold from the late 1980s through the 1990s. Developed as the sporting member of the Mazda 626/Capella family, it combined low-slung styling with a conventional front-engine layout and 2+2 seating. It sat between Mazda’s mainstream passenger cars and more specialised sports models, offering grand-touring comfort rather than the rotary-powered character of the RX-7.

The model had two generations. The first was closely related to the fifth-generation 626 and used four-cylinder engines, with turbocharged versions offered in some markets. Selected variants also featured four-wheel steering, then a notable Mazda chassis technology. The second generation introduced smoother 1990s styling and a choice of four-cylinder or 2.5-litre V6 power, depending on market and specification.

The MX-6 was developed during Mazda’s close cooperation with Ford and shared its basic architecture with the Ford Probe, while retaining separate styling and a distinct Mazda identity. North American cars were assembled at the joint-venture plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, while versions for other markets were built in Japan.

Known for balanced handling and everyday comfort, the MX-6 provided a practical alternative to a dedicated sports car. Its combination of coupé design, available performance engines and a usable cabin made it a distinctive part of Mazda’s 1990s range.
