About Mazda MX-5
The Mazda MX-5 is a compact, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat sports car introduced in 1989. Known as the MX-5 Miata in North America and the Roadster in Japan, it reinterpreted the lightweight open sports cars that had largely disappeared from the market. Its success renewed interest in affordable roadsters and made it one of Mazda’s most recognisable models.
The MX-5 has evolved through four generations, commonly identified as NA, NB, NC and ND. Each retains the same basic formula: a front-mounted four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive, compact dimensions and low weight. Safety, comfort and technology have advanced, but outright speed remains secondary to steering response, balance and driver involvement.
Most versions have a folding fabric roof. The third generation also offered a power-retractable hardtop, while the fourth added the RF, or Retractable Fastback, with an electrically operated hard roof section. Manual gearboxes are closely associated with the model, although automatic versions have been sold in many markets.
Within Mazda’s range, the MX-5 is its dedicated sports car and a clear expression of the brand’s “Jinba Ittai” driver-and-car philosophy. It is known for agile handling, near-even weight distribution, simple two-seat packaging and relative everyday usability.
