About Mazda MX-3

The Mazda MX-3 is a compact, front-wheel-drive coupe produced from 1991 to 1998. Introduced at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, it used a three-door liftback body with 2+2 seating, combining sporty styling with more luggage access than a conventional two-door coupe. It occupied the smaller end of Mazda’s early-1990s sporting range and targeted buyers seeking an attainable, distinctive alternative to larger performance cars.

The model was built in a single generation, although specifications and names varied by market. It was sold as the MX-3 in many export regions, as the MX-3 Precidia in Canada and under the Eunos Presso and Autozam AZ-3 names in Japan. Australia also received it as the Eunos 30X. Four-cylinder engines of 1.5 or 1.6 litres were offered in selected markets, while the best-known version used Mazda’s 1.8-litre DOHC V6. At launch, Mazda described this as the world’s smallest-displacement mass-produced V6. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available.

The MX-3 is chiefly remembered for its unusual small-capacity V6, rounded early-1990s design and balance of compact dimensions, four-seat accommodation and hatchback practicality. It was not replaced by a direct second generation, leaving it as a distinct, short-lived part of Mazda’s coupe range.
