About Mazda MPV
The Mazda MPV is a multi-purpose minivan introduced in North America in 1988 and in Japan in 1990. It served as Mazda’s larger family vehicle, offering three-row seating and more passenger and luggage space than the brand’s conventional cars. Production spanned three generations and ended in 2016.
The first generation used a rear-wheel-drive layout and was unusual among early minivans for offering selectable four-wheel drive in some versions. The second generation arrived in 1999 with front-wheel drive, sliding rear doors and more conventional minivan packaging. Depending on year and market, MPV models were available with four-cylinder or V6 engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and front-, rear- or four-wheel drive.
A third generation was introduced in Japan in 2006, with eight-seat accommodation, naturally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and front- or four-wheel drive. It was also sold as the Mazda8 in certain markets, while North American sales ended after the previous generation. Within Mazda’s range, the MPV sat above the smaller Premacy/Mazda5 and was positioned as the company’s flagship minivan. It is chiefly known for practical seating, flexible cabin arrangements and a more car-like driving character than many large people carriers.
