About Mazda Mazda6
The Mazda Mazda6 is a mid-size passenger car introduced in 2002 as the successor to Mazda’s long-running 626/Capella line. It was sold as the Atenza in Japan until adopting the Mazda6 name there in 2019. The model became an important part of Mazda’s early “Zoom-Zoom” era and later served as the flagship of the brand’s conventional passenger-car range.
Three generations were produced. The first two offered four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and station wagon body styles, although availability differed by country. The third generation, launched in 2012, concentrated on sedan and wagon versions and introduced Mazda’s Kodo design language and a broad application of Skyactiv chassis, engine and transmission technologies.
Powertrains varied widely across markets and model years, including naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, diesels, manual and automatic transmissions, and selected all-wheel-drive versions. Production was centred in Japan, with regional manufacturing also taking place in North America and China at different times.
The Mazda6 competed with mainstream family and executive-class cars but was distinguished by responsive handling, restrained styling and a driver-focused cabin. Its availability ended at different times by market: US sales stopped after the 2021 model year, while production for Japan ended in 2024.
