About Mazda Mazda5

The Mazda Mazda5 is a compact multi-purpose vehicle whose lineage began with the Premacy, introduced in Japan in 1999. From the second generation, Mazda5 became the name used in many export markets, while Premacy continued in Japan. Three generations appeared, launched in 1999, 2005 and 2010. Production continued in some markets until 2018, although US sales ended after the 2015 model year.

Positioned between a compact car and a conventional minivan, the Mazda5 combined a relatively small footprint with a flexible three-row cabin. Depending on generation and market, versions offered five, six or seven seats. The later generations are especially known for their twin sliding rear doors, adaptable folding seats and easier access in confined parking spaces.

Engine choices varied by region and included four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, with manual and automatic transmissions. Front-wheel drive was standard in most markets, while selected Japanese versions offered four-wheel drive. The third generation introduced distinctive flowing body lines and later gained SKYACTIV-related updates in Japan.

Within Mazda’s range, the Mazda5 served as a smaller, more manoeuvrable alternative to the larger MPV. Its main qualities were efficient interior packaging, family-friendly versatility and road manners closer to a passenger car than a full-size people carrier.
