About Mazda Laputa
The Mazda Laputa was a Japanese-market kei passenger car sold from March 1999 to January 2006. Supplied by Suzuki under an OEM agreement and closely based on the Suzuki Kei, it gave Mazda a practical entry in Japan’s competitive kei class. Its semi-tall hatchback body, elevated seating position and relatively high ground clearance placed it between a conventional small hatchback and a compact crossover-style vehicle.
The Laputa remained a single generation, although it received several updates to its styling, cabin, equipment, safety and emissions performance. Early cars were available with three- or five-door bodies, while later versions concentrated on the five-door layout. Depending on year and grade, buyers could choose front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, naturally aspirated or turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines, and manual or automatic transmissions.
Versions ranged from basic economy-focused models to better-equipped turbo grades. The S-Turbo was the sportier variation, while other models prioritised affordability and everyday usability. Compact exterior dimensions suited crowded streets and limited parking, while the boxy shape provided useful passenger and luggage space.
Within Mazda’s domestic range, the Laputa offered a more rugged and versatile alternative to a basic city car. It is mainly known for easy access, good visibility, flexible packaging and the availability of four-wheel drive and turbo performance in a very small footprint.
