About Mazda CX-9

The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size, three-row crossover SUV developed primarily for North America and built in Hiroshima, Japan. Introduced for the 2007 model year, it served as Mazda’s largest and most family-oriented SUV, combining seating for up to seven with road-focused handling and a more streamlined shape than many traditional sport utility vehicles.

Two generations were produced. The first used V6 petrol engines and was offered with front- or all-wheel drive. The second arrived for 2016 with Mazda’s Kodo design language, Skyactiv engineering and a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in place of the V6. Depending on market and trim, versions included front-wheel drive or i-Activ all-wheel drive, six- or seven-seat cabins, and increasingly premium grades such as Grand Touring and Signature.

The CX-9 occupied the flagship position in Mazda’s crossover range for much of its life. It was known for responsive steering, composed on-road manners, a refined cabin and a stronger emphasis on design than is typical of a practical three-row vehicle. Its packaging favoured a car-like driving experience while retaining the passenger and cargo flexibility expected from a family crossover. US sales ended after the 2023 model year as Mazda shifted its large-SUV role to the CX-90.
