About Mazda CX-7
The Mazda CX-7 is a five-seat midsize crossover SUV introduced in 2006. Developed from the MX-Crossport concept and launched first in North America, it was the first production Mazda to use the CX naming convention. The model helped establish the brand’s modern crossover range and later sat below the larger, three-row CX-9.
Produced in a single generation, the CX-7 combined a relatively low, sweeping body with the cabin space and raised driving position of an SUV. A substantial update arrived around 2009–2010, bringing revised exterior styling, interior improvements and changes to the available engine range. Production and sales dates varied by country, with 2012 being its final model year in North America.
The best-known version used Mazda’s 2.3-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine, paired with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive depending on specification. Some markets also received a non-turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine, while Europe and Australia offered a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. Equipment and trim names differed by region.
Within Mazda’s lineup, the CX-7 was positioned as a more road-focused alternative to traditional SUVs. It is chiefly known for distinctive styling, responsive handling and a stronger emphasis on driving character than many practical family crossovers of its period.
