About Mazda CX-50
The Mazda CX-50 is a compact, five-seat crossover SUV introduced for the 2023 model year. Developed mainly for North America, it combines Mazda’s road-focused driving character and restrained interior design with a more rugged, outdoor-oriented format. Production began in January 2022 at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
The CX-50 remains in its first generation. It is positioned alongside the CX-5 rather than as a direct replacement, offering a wider stance, greater emphasis on all-terrain capability and a cargo area designed for carrying outdoor equipment. Within Mazda’s SUV range, it sits above the smaller CX-30 and below the larger CX-70 and CX-90.
North American versions have standard all-wheel drive. Major powertrain choices include naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engines, while a hybrid joined the range for the 2025 model year. The hybrid uses an electrically assisted all-wheel-drive system and focuses on improved fuel efficiency. Trim levels vary by year and include comfort-oriented models as well as the Meridian Edition, which adds more adventure-focused styling and equipment.
The CX-50 is known for responsive handling, a relatively low and wide profile, practical two-row accommodation and a cabin with a more upmarket appearance than many mainstream compact SUVs.
