About Mazda CX-4
The Mazda CX-4 is a compact five-door crossover developed specifically for China. It debuted at the 2016 Beijing Motor Show and entered the Chinese market in June 2016. Local production was handled through Mazda’s manufacturing partnership with FAW, making the CX-4 a market-specific model rather than a globally distributed SUV. Production ended in April 2023.
Developed under the “Exploring Coupe” concept, the CX-4 combines a low, swept-back roofline with the raised ground clearance and rear hatch of a crossover. It occupied a sportier, more style-focused position in Mazda’s SUV range, complementing the more conventional CX-5. The model featured Mazda’s Kodo design language and Skyactiv engineering, with an emphasis on responsive handling, a low centre of gravity and everyday practicality.
The CX-4 remained a single-generation model, although an update introduced in 2020 brought revised exterior styling and equipment changes rather than a complete redesign. Major versions used naturally aspirated 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engines. Depending on specification, the range offered front-wheel drive or i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, while six-speed manual and automatic transmissions were available at launch. Notable equipment included i-ACTIVSENSE driver-assistance technology and MZD Connect infotainment.
